Lifting Authority/ Competent Person

Lifting and hoisting operations are one of the major causes of fatalities and serious incidents. Every type of lift has a set of risks that need to be managed if the lift is to be undertaken in a safe and efficient manner.
Despite the vast number of regulations, standards and guidelines that apply to lifting, incidents continue to occur. This document is based on international standards for preventing fatalities and serious incidents.

Aim and objective

This aim of this module is to give the attendees an understanding of the Lifting Authority’s responsibilities and how to fulfill them, prior to assessment.

The intent of this module is to bring about a significant reduction in lifting incidents by highlighting the essential principles of safe lifting and encouraging their strict application to lifting and hoisting operations. This module describes lifting and hoisting safety elements to be incorporated into an organization’s management system.

Lifting operations roles & responsibilities

Safe Systems of Work

The inspection of lifting equipment & the concept of discard criteria​

Safe use of lifting equipment

Management of rigging equipment

The planning of lifting operations (defining the lift & developing a relevant lift plan)

Management & assessment of personnel

Lifting categorization, simple, complicated, complex/critical

The importance of Risk Assessment & Toolbox Talks

Practical Exercises include:

Carrying out a risk assessment

Compiling & delivering a toolbox talk

Inspecting lifting equipment and accessories

Compiling a Lift Plan

Certification

Attendees successfully meeting the Lifting Authority Training requirements will be awarded a Lifting Authority certificate.

Assessment

The attendees will be subject to a 40 questions underpinning knowledge assessment. A pass mark of 80% is required.

You can attend a course at one of our training centres, or have the course delivered in your workplace

Prerequisite(s)

Attendees must have successfully completed a Rigger/Slinger/Banksman course or recognized equivalent

For this course all delegates are required to provide their own protective clothing (ie) hardhat, safety boots, safety glasses & coveralls etc
